Let Andy Sturdevant curate your Art-a-Whirl weekend

Minneapolis-based writer, artist and man about town Andy Sturdevant of South 12th graciously offers his expert picks for Art-a-Whirl 2009.

So the narrative goes like this: in the 1990s, after being forced out of Minneapolis’ Warehouse District by rising rents, sports bars and a lingering post-Morning in America hangover, most visual artists migrated across the river to Northeast. At the time, it was a quiet, blue-collar Eastern European enclave that was full of empty storefronts and warehouses, and about as trendy as Sunday afternoon dinner at your babcia’s house. The locus of the Minneapolis art scene has been located there since, and has in fact integrated very nicely into the overall neighborhood feeling of the area. Northeast is Orthodox churches, corner bars and some of the best galleries in town.

Every May, when the city is finally waking up from winter, the Northeast art community throws itself a weekend-long party up there, and the studio doors are flung wide open. It’s not just art; there are bands, dance parties, cross-disciplinary undertakings of all kinds, and plenty of drink specials. It can be overwhelming working your way through even a light itinerary – and, like with many events of this nature, you’ll have to wade through a lot of schlock – so I’ve narrowed it down to a few shows that look particularly interesting.

You can find a comprehensive guide here, or here. Or, actually, you can just ask the people you meet on the street or in the bar what’s good; people will have opinions. I’ve truly found word-of-mouth is still the best way to navigate through the morass of studios, galleries and more informal not-quite-either spaces that make up the Northeast.

S.S. Infinite Regress
Creative Electric was a beloved Northeast studio that brought in both talented locals (Chris Larson) and oddball national artists (Negativland) until it closed up shop a few years. However, its owners miraculously came into possession of some prime Mississippi riverfront and an honest-to-god houseboat last year, so they have made great use of both by retrofitting the vessel with wall-size mirrors and a bevy of film projectors, turning it into a floating cinematic funhouse for guests to interact with. White hazmat suits will apparently be provided. Oh, yeah – there’ll be bands playing on floating pontoons on the goddamned river, too. Anchors aweigh!

Sellout opening
Three artists (at least two of whom moonlight as arts writers) will be launching a new conceptual and small work-focused space they’re calling Sellout this weekend in the Northrup King Building. Ruben Nusz, Scott Stulen and John Fleischer will be showing new mixed-media work, and they also promises to have a well-stocked, carefully curated flat file of affordably-priced new work by your favorite local emerging and mid-career artists available for sale.

Fox Tax

Fox Tax is a uniquely Minneapolis institution that nicely reconciles our city’s bottomless love of the arts with our profound appreciation for order and responsibility: an accounting firm that deals solely with artists and creatives, with a gallery inside (full disclosure: yes, they do my taxes). For Art-A-Whirl, their house curator Emma Berg has brought together five artists who primarily work as painters, including Tynan Kerr, whose impromptu installations can often be found on telephone poles and empty buildings around town, and Alex Kuno, whose fantastical oil paintings of childhood narratives strikes the right notes of whimsy and dread.

Don’t Sleep On It

The teens at the Walker Arts Center’s Teen Arts Council have commandeered a section of the California Building, and with the help of some local luminaries like Hardland/Heartland, Burlesque Design, Andy Ducett and John Grider, turned it into a 24-hour interactive artmaking marathon, with each group of artists working in three-hour sections. This promises to be an exciting mashup of Warhol’s Factory, Village of the Damned, Glenn O’Brien’s TV Party and the films of John Hughes, which is almost the greatest thing I can think of.

Gastro Non Grata

Gastro Non Grata is an ongoing quarterly event that has collaboratively paired the two drunkest types of people you know -- musicians and professional cooks -- with exciting results. They’ll be camping out at the Modern Café on 13th Avenue, which is quickly becoming one of the most interesting stretches of road in the city. A pig will be roasted, baklava will be served, several bands will play all day on Sunday, and Minneapolis’ most beloved podcast, Flak Radio, will be kicking things off at 11am. Two Brothers Beer will provide the drinks.

Broken Crow & OverUnder to collaborate on Shuga Records mural this weekend

It's official: the Minneapolis art duo Broken Crow -- John Grider and Mike Fitzsimmons -- will be creating a gigantic stencil mural on the exterior of Shuga Records (formerly the Minnesota Center for Photography) in Northeast Minneapolis. While the store doesn't open 'til June 1, the pair will be transforming the massive west wall of the building during this weekend's Art-a-Whirl festival. Broken Crow's John Grider tells me that the imagery will include "porcupines, bears, houses, birds, and records, and who knows what else." Another bit of news: Broken Crow is flying in Erik Burke of Overunder to help with the piece. Here's a time-lapse of a work (featuring the aforementioned bears and porcupines) they collaborated on in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, last week:



All three artists will be ducking out for a few hours to take part in another Art-a-Whirl project: The Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) is hosting "Don't Sleep On It," a 24-hour art marathon in which a slew of local artists are transforming a space in the California Building over the course of a day and night. Designing Obama: May 12 at the Walker (featuring yours truly)

For decades, political campaign advertising had more in common with Menard's than Milton Glaser: the graphic designer -- whose job was to sell candidates through an expected visual language of flag-toned stars and/or bars -- took the back seat, while the well-funded media buyer got the front. Then came Barack Obama. His campaign, lead by design director Scott Thomas, enlisted designer Sol Sender to both create a memorable, appealing identity and advance the lessons of Howard Dean's web-savvy "netroots" surge of 2004.

We all know what happened next. Obama's "O" logo became ubiquitous, embraced and modified by supporters so it appeared everywhere: carved into Halloween pumpkins, spray-painted on city concrete, plastered on cars, t-shirts and mugs, reprinted on one of American history's most recognized political posters, and interpreted by DIYers on murals, baked goods, light-up bike spokes and beyond.

Next Tuesday, May 12, Thomas and Sender will be speaking at Minneapolis' Walker Art Center on the development of the Obama campaign in a panel called, "Desiging Obama" -- and I'll be moderating the discussion. Got a question for Sender or Thomas? Leave 'em in comments.

Marketing Chinese board games to '60s swingers


With psychedelic type and day-glo graphics, this 1969 edition of the board game "Guru" -- recently unearthed in my basement (given to me by my friend Meredith when she moved away) -- promises "ACTION!" for "swingers of all ages." But upon opening the box, I found it's a rather unsexy, if creatively designed, version of the ancient Chinese game GO. (Oddly, the neon colors of the board and packaging clash with the plastic game pieces in primary colors.) Manufactured in Finland by E.S. Lowe Company, the game's instructions offer straight-ahead directions, with nary a mention of swingers. Perhaps the term had a different meaning then? Or maybe tossing about the word "swingers" was smart marketing back in '69?

Chicago stencil: Run, Blago, Run

Since early April, guerrilla murals showing a jogging Rod Blagojevich have been popping up around Chicago. While the stencil works are unsigned, artist Ray Noland is selling identical "Run, Blago, Run!" posters for $75 apiece on his site. "I just make the graphics," he told the Chicago Tribune.

San Francisco filmmaker Craig Baldwin's essential "Sonic Outlaws" is now online in its entirety at Ubuweb. The 1995 documentary profiles the audio-collage band Negativland just after they were sued by Island Records for their parody album featuring U2 and audio of cussin' "American Top 40" host Casey Kasem. A classic for anyone interested in fair use, copyfight and culturejamming.

• Minneapolis' John Grider of Broken Crow (above) and Brooklyn's Logan Hicks of Workhorse Visuals are being set loose on an abandoned bank in Brooklyn this week: Broken Horse will be the temporary installation of their collaborative work in the former Hamilton Savings & Loan Building. The opening reception is May 1; the following night Grider will be part of the Artbreak Gallery (Williamsburg) exhibition, The Great Out Doors.

You know it's there, but the anonymity makes it a powerful symbol of death itself... Kris' piece reminds us of how we treat our war dead. Until recently we didn't even allow photos of their coffins covered with flags. His piece only achieves the right to explore this issue because it's fundamentally rooted in a gesture of respect."

On April 25th, 2009, Jordan Seiler and PublicAdCampaign.com organized a massive takeover of these [unregistered, illegal] billboards called NYSAT (New York Street Advertising Takeover): 126 billboards throughout the city were white washed by dozens of volunteers. Then, over 80 artists transformed the advertising space into their personal pieces of art. Here's what I made.

The call-and-response street-art campaign Enjoy Banking takes the visual vocabulary of marketing, especially the kind of low-low-prices hype seen in windows of discount stores and loan-hawking banks and renders them, fittingly in "bubble" type, on stickers for application around New York City. Paul Fryer, Pieta

Paul Fryer's Pieta, a sculpture of Christ in the electric chair, has been raising hackles in Gap, France. Some, including the newspaper Le Monde, reacted angrily to its installation in a cathedral, but the work (from the collection of Francois Pinault) was suggested by the local bishop, Jean-Michel di Falco. He says:

"Usually, one does not feel any real emotions in front of something really scandalous: the Crucifixion.

"If Jesus had been sentenced today, he would have to reckon with the electric chair or other barbaric methods of execution. Scandalous is therefore not Jesus in the electric chair, but the indifference to his crucifixion."

• Issue 56 of Visionaire, the editioned art and fashion publication, is "solar": it "uses photo-sensitive printing wizardry that instantly transforms black-and-white artwork—by contributing artists that include Yoko Ono, M/M Paris, Alex Katz, John Baldessari, and Ryan McGinley—into vibrant color when exposed to direct sunlight."

• There's little of interest in this Flavorwire interview on "redefining urban art at the auction house," except for the last paragraph, in which Phillips de Pury & Co. curator Alex Smith give props to artist Judith Supine.

Walker Art Center curator Peter Eleey discusses two works in the exhibition The Quick and the Dead, which opens tonight. Tobias Rehberger's All your last week's desires, which features 11 lamps that replicate and respond to the lighting conditions at the museum one week prior to the moment you're looking at it. Pierre Huyghe's Timekeeper, a simple work made by sanding down a spot on the gallery wall revealing the history of the room, like rings on a tree. (Kudos to the Walker on this: hopefully, many more such videos are in the works.)

• Designer Ji Lee is on a mission: to preserve, photographically at least, New York City logos that still show the World Trade Center towers in their skylines. • Curator Peter Eleey discusses The Quick and the Dead, "an exhibition about the things we don’t know, the big questions and deep mysteries in life, and our desire for experiences that transcend those we have every day," which opens Apr. 25 at the Walker: "I find great beauty in works such as Jason Dodge’s simple bundle of cloth sitting on the gallery floor. The artist asked a weaver in Algeria to make it for him using the length of yarn it would take to go from the surface of the earth to where the weather ends -- essentially the border with outer space. Though it leads your mind to the outer reaches of the atmosphere, the cloth turns out to be much smaller than you might think. But I don’t think the works in the show clarify anything -- like Jason’s cloth, they instead offer expansive ways of thinking about things that are much bigger than themselves."

• The return of U.S. soldiers killed overseas has gone undocumented more than 5,000 times since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan. On Apr. 5, the remains of Air Force Staff Sgt. Phillip Meyers came home, and for the first time in 18 years the press was allowed to photograph it. The Big Picture offers a selection of photos showing the sobering yet stirring scenes from the return of fallen U.S. war heroes to home soil.

• An urban sketcher has created a Google Map of drawings throughout Barcelona.

The Wrong Brand

Steve McQueen's Hunger


When Steve McQueen showed the financiers of his new feature-length film an early cut, they were "shitting themselves," the British artist recalls. His first full-length film, which captures the final weeks of Irish hunger striker Bobby Sands' life, begins with a 22-minute scene -- 17 minutes of which have no cuts, pans or closeups -- of an actor playing Sands discussing his plan to starve himself. Not exactly the stuff of box office gold. But McQueen says, “I knew what I was doing.”

Apparently so. The Turner Prize winner won a Caméra d'Or at Cannes this year for Hunger, which plays at Minneapolis' Walker Art Center Apr. 10 through 26. McQueen was a boy when Sands, a member of the Irish Republican Army, started his hunger strike in 1981, but while it left a mark on him, he says the story has been "swept beneath the carpet, it hasn't been given any daylight, and for me it was one of, if not the, most important events happening in Britain in the last 30 years."



Then 27, Sands' final weeks of life were slow and excruciating: it took him 66 days to starve himself to death. But while Sands protested the British government, Hunger isn't intended as a fiercely political work (critic Rob Nelson says the World Socialist World criticized McQueen for the apolitical nature of the work). He told the Wall Street Journal, "Hero or villain, that's for other people to decide. For me, it's one of those situations where I'm a filmmaker, and this is actually what happened in history, this is a true event. For me, this is what happened. I'm not here to judge the situation; I'm here to examine and document it."

Still, McQueen won't say it's "art" either. The Observer's Sean O'Hagan writes:
A friend of mine from Northern Ireland, who has seen Hunger, said McQueen had 'pulled off the impossible' by 'making an art film about the IRA'. When I mention the term 'art film', McQueen thows me a fierce look. 'I don't know what you mean by that,' he says. 'What I tried to do was make the strongest, most powerful film I could from the events and the story. It may not have the conventional narrative of most feature films but that is my way of grappling with the subject. Art has absolutely nothing to do with it.'

Making homelessness visible


Two projects set out to raise visibility of homelessness -- the first by making a homeless man invisible. In Düsseldorf during Christmas, a man named Lutz hawks copies of FiftyFifty, a paper made by homeless people, while projected him on him is video of the scene behind him. The message (as a cardboard placard in front of him says): "Don't ignore me."

The placards visible in a project for the Weingart Homeless Center in Los Angles reads, "Before you look away, put yourself in my place." A photographer shot some of the city's 70,000 homeless "in the places they call home," and then printed the images out as life-sized cardboard cutouts with the faces removed. These cut-outs were placed in upscale shopping districts in Beverly Hills.

D&D co-creator Arneson dies

Huffington Post:
Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy game and a pioneer of role-playing entertainment, died after a two-year battle with cancer, his family said Thursday. He was 61.

Arneson's daughter, Malia Weinhagen of Maplewood, said her father died peacefully Tuesday in hospice care in St. Paul.
