Some pieces in German photographer Patrik Budenz's series "
Post Mortem" are incredibly wrenching to encounter: the long eyelashes of a girl whose chest is cracked open after an autopsy, the detail of wrinkled fingers and a pool of blood, presumably on a coroner's table. (He depicts similar themes in the equally grisly "
Search for Evidence" series, shot in a forensics lab.) But others achieve impact sans viscera. This shot shows medical pins, screws and artificial joints that remain after cremation as a testament to the ephemerality of the body.
