Thomas Hirschhorn's unbuilt book
Two years ago, artist Thomas Hirschhorn visited Minneapolis with a plan: to create a 50-foot-tall effigy of Deleuze & Guattari's classic philosophical text A Thousand Plateaus on a corner of diverse, gritty Lake Street. He loves the "pointless disproportionality" of roadside attractions like the Jolly Green Giant Statue in Blue Earth, MN, and the Big Fish Supper Club in Bena, MN, and so he set out to create a "Road Side Giant" of his own--only this one would serve his passions: for two months this "obscene gift" to Minneapolis was to print a daily philosophy newspaper, present talks by international thinkers, and house both Hirschhorn's residency and a lending library of philosophy books. Alas, the project was never realized, its budget not as outsized as its vision. Read all about it at Off Center.
