More secrecy from Bush
At 6:40 last night--too late for any experts to review the document--the Bush administration signed an order delaying until 2006 the release of millions of government documents that would've been declassified in April. It also gives the government new powers to reclassify documents. According to Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists, the order "will slow the declassification process" and "signals a greater affinity for secrecy." He adds, in a sentiment more and more common during the Bush/Ashcroft reign, "
It makes secrecy reflexive rather than intelligent." The records that would've been declassified in April date back 25 years--to George H.W. Bush's tenure as director of the CIA. A coincidence, I'm sure.
