I just stumbled upon this poetic work by Mona Hatoum, exhibited in the Arsenale at this year's
Venice Biennale. It's called
+ and - and consists of a sand pit, a motor, and an aluminum propeller that's smooth on one side and serrated on the other. It's like a Japanese zen garden, only it's automated, so grooves are continuously and simultaneously created and erased.
