In a controversial move, a Presbyterian committee "accused five companies Friday of contributing to 'ongoing violence that plagues Israel and Palestine' and pledged to use the church's multimillion-dollar stock holdings in the businesses to pressure them to stop." The companies, who sell night vision goggles, helicopters used by the Israeli army, and telecommunications equipement, are: Caterpillar.; Citigroup; ITT Industries; Motorola; and United Technologies. The committee says it hopes to pressure the companies to change their practices in the Middle East, but insists that divestment will be a last resort.
